Chelsey's 17th Birthday

I am at home in Maryland and since my little sister turned 17 a few weeks ago I decided to make her a late birthday cake.  She loves zebra print and red these days and between that and my new fondant skills, this is what I came up with.

My bow and centering skills could use some work, but I think it turned out pretty good.  Here are some step by steps...

It was so DARN humid today that working with fondant was a little tough, but I think it still looked alright.  The bow needed to have dried overnight, but next time I will get all the timing right.

It's much better to cut the layers after you take them all down.  The bottom was chocolate with cookies and cream.  Always a classic.  The middle layer was strawberry short cake.  It had vanilla cake with whipped cream and strawberries between each layer.  This was especially for Chelsey and she loved it!  The top layer was ultimate coconut.  That cake never EVER get old.

seafoam and red

My friends and I have all started pinning pictured on PINTEREST.  If you do not know about it, it is the best idea EVER!  Because of my friend's board, I have decided that seafoam and red is the most beautiful color combination in this universe.  At least it is in my top 3.  I got red fondant this week for another cake so I figured, why not make some cupcakes.

rubix cube success

Thanks to the cake optimist giveaway, more people have found out about my blog and started to order things.  For this past weekend, I had an order for a RUBIX CUBE cake for a birthday party.  I ordered some fondant and gathered up my courage and got to baking.  I have never made a fondant cake for something other than my cake class or friends so I was a little nervous, but it went surprisingly well.  I made three 8" square chocolate cakes and filled them with chocolate mousse.  I buttercreamed them and froze them and covered them with black fondant.  The rubix colors were cut with a pizza cutter and my sewing ruler.  I cut 2" squares and glued them on.  I'm not sure if this cube is solvable, but it turned out looking pretty cute!

 Hard at work.

Pretty rubixy.

There are no boxes tall enough, but I love this with the sticker!

mail!

I love getting mail!  I think it is so cool how a little piece of paper can travel thousands of miles in a few days to reach you.  I like it even better when the mail is something I want real bad, and when I can track it every step of the way on ups.com!  Today all of my tracking finally paid off and my NEW BUSINESS CARDS came!!!  I ordered them last week after I got a few people asking for them and after finding them online at vistaprint.com for $9.99 for 500!  I thought that was such a good price that I surely had money left to get some stickers and address labels too right???  So I ended up spending about $25, but hey, at least I made vistaprint happy.  So... if you need any business cards or if people ask for them, I have about 493 sitting in my room!
